10 Essential Tools for Common Household Repairs and DIY

Whether you’re pretty handy and want to fix things yourself or you just want to try your hand at some simple DIY projects there are a few basic tools that you can use to do just about everything.

  • Power Drill– Probably the most useful tool you could get when it comes to putting things together or hanging things would be a power drill with bit set. Many places sell 10.8v drills but the issue with these is that many are under powered and may not last for your whole project.

There are many brands to choose from, each with their own ranges. Many brands have a cheaper lower range model for the average consumer as opposed to their top of the line models which can cost more than the price of a second hand car.

If longevity is not a necessity, OEM or Off brands can be had for little cost but these often do not have warranty, may catch fire, or cause injury due to inferior production methods and materials.

  • Hammer– Whether you are trying to put things together or just break them, a hammer is very useful.  One of the most common hammers used is a Claw Hammer which has a cylinder side for driving nails and a claw which can be used for removing nails as well as prying things apart.

Regarding brands with hammers this honestly doesn’t matter as long as the metal is made of steel and not a cheap zinc alloy that will shatter on impact.

  • Screw Drivers are another essential tool, especially when it comes to putting together your furniture from a kit. The issue is that the screw drivers that generally come with the furniture kits are poor quality and often the handles are too small to get a really good grip when trying to tighten a screw all of the way down.

This is why finding the right screwdriver for your job at hand is essential.

Screwdrivers come in all sizes, shapes, and heads. Others are an all in one with a changeable tip.

Quality is the most important part of getting a screwdriver set as well a warranty. Some brands carry a lifetime warranty in which if it ever breaks the company will replace it no questions asked and no matter how old the tool is.

  • Safety Goggles/Glasses, because safety is number one Priority. (Catch line from a very good experiment channel). Depending on the project you may want to either wear safety glasses or goggles, either way eye protection is recommended in almost any project you do as you only have two eyes.

Until they perfect robotic eye implants it would probably be in your best interest to keep both eyes intact.

  • Locking Pliers- These are a good all-around tool as you can adjust them and use them for so many things. They are generally used for stripped or stuck nuts or bolts that a normal wrench cannot get a grip on but are good for almost anything that needs tightening or loosening. Cheaper brands may not work so well and break though due to poor quality assembly and material.

  • Duct Tape, to stick just about everything that isn’t supposed to move. This tape is usually super strong and will stick to almost anything. For something that you want a temporary fix and you don’t care what it looks like this is a good way to do it. If you would like to just use it for simple cute craft projects they offer different design prints now.

  • Penetrating Oil/ Rust Remover, this is the opposite of Duct Tape in that if something is stuck or squeaking and you want it to move freely you would spray some of this on and wouldn’t have to worry about it rusting as easily. Many times, this will be used in combination with Locking Pliers when getting things unstuck.

  • Super Glue- If you’re like most people you will have broken something tiny or simple that requires just a little bit of super strong glue to fix it. While it isn’t the perfect fix for things it helps to create a semi strong temporary fix that will dry super-fast. Safety note though, do not get it on your hands. You will be in for a world of either annoyance or pain.

  • Measuring Tape/ Laser If you’re hanging a picture or trying to decide if your furniture will fit this is an essential tool to have. If you do not know the dimensions of you space it will make it difficult to buy furniture or do anything that has a limited space to place things in. There are many types of measuring devices, some more accurate than others depending on the level of accuracy you need. If you need just general measurements any will do, but for other projects that require an exact measurement down to the millimeter quality is very important and will come at a cost.

  • Your Cell Phone/internet Connection– With the plethora of information on the internet it is now an essential tool for almost every task. If you have trouble doing something it is almost guaranteed the question has been asked before and an answer given somewhere on the internet. In a few short clicks or well-placed taps, you can usually find the answer to all of your troubles.

Guide to Buying a Bed

When we get our new place, and are planning our bedroom, a new bed is always part of that. But there are certain things to consider before you pull the trigger on your purchase.

One of the biggest considerations is the size of your room.

For each room, much of it is determined on the purpose of the room.

For a small room with high ceilings if used by your children, you may elect to get a bunk bed/desk combo so that they will have an area to do their school work as well as sleep without compromising what little space there is.

This is also acceptable for a single business person who is focusing on work a lot and doesn’t expect to have guests spend the night.

For the small room if used for nothing more than sleeping you may want to just have a large comfy wall to wall bed. But this could make the room feel extremely cramped and congested.

If your room is this small though you may just want to consider moving either into a new house or another room. With this arrangement, there isn’t much you can do with it feng shui wise or much else. Cleaning under the bed or anywhere else in the room would also become quite a task as you try to reach in-between the bed and the walls.

Many may choose instead to have a more workable aesthetic area by getting a smaller bed and decorating the rest of the space

Large rooms you have so many options that it would be hard to go wrong…. In most cases that is.

There are several ways to make a big room seem a bit too big. An example of this would be a small bed in an empty room much like a hospital room.

If the room is to be used by you and your significant other you can get a nice king size French bed along with all the matching furniture to accompany it… if that’s your thing.

Okay so now that we have covered what type of bed would be good for your room (mostly as people have their own preferences) we can finally get to how to actually buy the mattress for your bed frame.

I know it seems silly to think of because a queen or king mattress should fit a queen or king frame, right?

In many cases you would be right. Unless you buy the frame and mattress separately. Honestly, until my co-worker actually brought it up I had never thought about it but it turns out that many countries actually have different sizes with the same name.

I’ll put it all in CM for consistency sake

*Ikea Uses European and US sizes so if you buy a local mattress it may be too short

As you can see there are so many different variations of mattress size that if you do know what to look for when purchasing your new mattress, you may end up with a US size bedframe with a Malaysian sized mattress and have a 13cm gap either at the head or foot of your bed.

So how to fix this if you have improperly sized your mattress to your frame and now have a gap?

The cheapest solutions are buy a large body pillow (under Rm100) or cheap blanket and just fill in the gap.

Some companies make fillers and wedges for this but they want way too much money for a small piece of foam, around Rm300.

The best preventative measure you can use a measuring tape or get the specs from the manufacturer before purchasing so that you know that it will fit or at least be able to get your money back if it doesn’t.

After you have picked the size of the mattress comes the material of the mattress as not all of them are created equal!

You have Foam or Memory Foam mattresses which can either be extremely soft or hard depending on your preference and budget. These are advertised for a more comfortable sleep as the foam will usually contour to your body and give even support.

Finding a “bargain” with these can be hit or miss as many may advertise Natural Latex or Memory Foam but give you normal foam that will spoil much faster.

Next on the chopping block there are Spring Mattresses which support your body with dozens of coils of metal. Largest advantage of these are that they have a tendency to stay cooler as they do not absorb as much heat.

Since the springs are made of metal over time the weight they support will change the shape and strength of each of these springs giving low spots and areas that are softer than others. This is often the reason why mattresses should be turned every so often to evenly wear the springs.

There is a material that has been around for many years but recently has become more mainstream for its ability to keep shape and remain firm.

Coconut Fiber mattresses are wonderful for those who like to sleep on a much firmer surface. An additional advantage is that the bed will stay cooler because it will not absorb the heat and can be found for a relatively low price.

A major downside to these mattresses though are weight and difficulty in moving them as the material is very stiff and difficult if even possible to fold.

Combination mattresses are exactly like they sound, A combination of different materials. So you can get them in a million different combination of the above materials as well as others not covered here.  They give the benefits of each design and mix them together to give a completely customized feel.

Pricing can vary depending on what name is sewn into the cover as well as the quality of the materials used.

With deciding which mattress you want to sleep on there is only one true test you can do though. You’ve got to lay on it and feel it for yourself.

Hopefully this article will help you choose the bed that is perfect for you,

Have a Happy Appy Day!

Wednesday July 11th

The work week is already half over and it feels like it had just begun, no new updates other than adding some graphics to the banner for the Facebook page to hopefully give a bit of illustration to what AppyHome Plus will help you with.

On another note, since beginning the blog there have been an onslaught of spam comments from gambling websites. While the words are very encouraging we do not encourage gambling or promote it.

Work in Progress

Hello everyone!

It’s Friday! Hopefully everyone has a great weekend!

As for the blog, Current status:

Angry Computer GIF

WordPress is supposed to be user friendly and so on and so fourth…..

So why is there no option to make the white part of the background a bit transparent!!!!!

Anyway, see how…. Tomorrow…..

It’s a new day!

Hello Everyone!

A lot of things have changed at AppyHome Plus over the last year,

  • We’ve gotten our own in-house devs

Image result for PROGRAMMER CAT

  • Created a whole new app interface

  • Hired a new graphic design team

  • Created a new mascot

  • Completely changed the Logo

And we even got new never before used desks! (Although we still have the same chairs)

With all of these changes, we still haven’t forgotten the goal that we initially set out to achieve.

No, not world domination, we have to save that for another day.

Our goal still remains the same as the day we were founded, to bring premium quality home products, services, and renovations at a price that just about everyone can afford.

Because honestly, If you have a room that looks like this:

Not because you’re remodeling, everything just costs too much to use, how can your house feel like home?

With that being said, things will change. For the better or the worst no one can know. For us we will just look back at the past as a stepping stone to something greater as we change and adapt to the world around us.

Here is to the future, may you all be there to join us!

AppyHome Plus Official Blog Page

First and foremost, Welcome!

This is a fresh start for the AppyHome Plus Website and Blog that has been needed for quite some time now. We are not sure how but some malicious code kept wandering in through a plugin and changing things. Every time it would get fixed in one part of the website, it would pop up in another making whatever page it was on become an unreachable site.

You can see how counterproductive this was.

So…… we decided to completely wipe the site and start over

After a few design decisions with the team, and our graphic designer working until we thought he would collapse from exhaustion, we now have a functional and visually pleasing site that is now free of random bugs!

The site will continue to change as we update and reintegrate some features we lost when wiping the old site, we promise that it will only get better though!

So stick around for a while and make yourself comfy while we work on making life a bit easier!
